Vice President J.D. Vance will transport Charlie Kirk’s casket from Utah to Arizona aboard Air Force Two, returning the conservative activist’s remains home after he was assassinated while speaking on a college campus in Utah.
The second family is meeting with Mr. Kirk’s family and friends in Utah before making the trip to Arizona, where the Kirk family resides, said a source familiar with the arrangement.
Mr. Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA, a conservative organization, and its headquarters are located in Phoenix. He lived in Arizona with his wife and their two young children.
He was shot in the neck Wednesday while speaking to a crowd at Utah Valley University. His killer is still at large.
Mr. Vance and Mr. Kirk were friends, which the vice president detailed in a lengthy eulogy posted on X late Wednesday.
“Charlie Kirk was a true friend. The kind of guy you could say something to and know it would always stay with him. I am on more than a few group chats with Charlie and people he introduced me to over the years. We celebrate weddings and babies, bust each other’s chops, and mourn the loss of loved ones. We talk about politics and policy and sports and life,” he wrote.
Mr. Vance and second lady Usha Vance were originally scheduled to be in New York City for the ceremony commemorating the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, but traveled to Utah instead.
