U.S. Capitol Police said they arrested two car thieves who had illegal guns on them Sunday after the pair crashed into a barricade near the Capitol grounds.
Authorities arrested Ricardo L. Glass and Onosetale Okojie, both 20 years old and District residents, on charges of auto theft, fleeing from police, driving under the influence and multiple gun charges — including one of the firearms having a “giggle switch” that allows the gun to shoot as if it’s fully automatic.
“This is just another example of our officers and their vigilance and perseverance putting away dangerous criminals,” USCP Assistant Chief Sean Gallagher said in a press release. “They are constantly working to keep everyone safe throughout the Capitol Complex.”
Police said they noticed the suspects when their car was idling at a green light around 2:15 a.m. Sunday near Union Station.
Officers suspected the driver was impaired and tried to make a traffic stop, but police said the driver became alarmed and sped off.
The driver crashed into the Capitol Complex’s vehicle barricade at First and D streets in Northeast moments later.
Authorities said two suspects got out of the car and made a run for it, but officers were able to capture them just blocks away from the crash scene.
Police said they found a Glock handgun with an extended magazine near the passenger seat.
Another Glock that had been modified with the “giggle switch” was found in a flower bed on the 100 block of C Street NE, where one of the suspects was arrested.
The crashed car — an Infiniti Q50 — was reported stolen out of Prince George’s County, Maryland.
