NextImg:Capitals’ Ovechkin to partner with Russian streaming service for biopic

The Alex Ovechkin story is coming to a Russian streaming service.

The captain of the Washington Capitals announced Tuesday a deal with technology company Yandex — and its streaming platform, Kinopoisk — to create a film, documentary or series about his career.

The companies didn’t announce any details about the project, including whether it would be a dramatized re-creation of Ovechkin’s career or an in-depth documentary in the vein of Michael Jordan’s “The Last Dance” project of 2020.

Ovechkin has also agreed to serve as an ambassador for Yandex and appear in its commercials. Plus Studio, the company’s production label, received rights to adapt the three-time MVP’s career in the deal.

The Russian broke the NHL’s goals record last season, passing Wayne Gretzky with the 895th goal of his career. Ovechkin, who turns 40 in September, is entering the final year of his contract with the Capitals.

The 12-time All-Star has said he would retire from the NHL when his contract expires. He noted that he would play one more season with Dynamo Moscow, his hometown club, before hanging up his skates.
