Police in Southern California said they arrested three teenagers after the trio attacked a college security officer and one of the teens swung an ax at other guards.

Fullerton Police said they arrested three males — Elijah Balfe and Austin Valdovinos, both 18, as well as a 17-year-old boy — and charged all of them with assault with a deadly weapon for the incident at Fullerton College on Friday.

Mr. Balfe and Mr. Valdovinos were taken to the Fullerton City Jail. The 17-year-old was booked at the Orange County Juvenile Hall.

Authorities said a Fullerton College security officer first made contact with the three teens while the suspects were trespassing on campus property before dawn.

The teens immediately jumped the guard, who police said was “punched, kicked, head-stomped and eye-gouged” during the attack.

Police said more guards came to assist the victim, prompting the 17-year-old boy to remove a tomahawk from his backpack and swing it at the responding security officers. No one was struck by the ax.

Mr. Balfe was detained at the scene by campus security while Mr. Valdovinos and the 17-year-old ran from the area.

The younger boy was taken into custody by Fullerton Police shortly afterward.

Mr. Valdovinos was found hiding in a nearby residence and was arrested after a brief standoff with officers.

The victim, a 53-year-old man, was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.
