A California family found 1 million pennies inside their loved one’s home and is trying to recoup some value from the discovery.

Los Angeles-area realtor John Reyes came across the stash of loose change while cleaning out a crawl space in the Pico-Union home of his wife’s late father, according to KTLA.

The hundreds of thousands of pennies were stored in paper rolls that were slotted into boxes, crates and bank bags. Many of the pennies were made of copper, rather than zinc, which the U.S. switched to in the 1980s.

Mr. Reyes told the TV station that no bank wants to house the pennies, with the million adding up to $10,000. And his extended family doesn’t want to take them to Coinstar because of the company’s 11.9% cut and the difficulty in hauling all the coins.

Mr. Reyes said his loved ones are listing the penny collection on resale website OfferUp for $25,000. But a few banks have encouraged the family to sift through the pennies and see if they can stumble on an even more valuable find.

“You see all these stories of people finding pennies worth $2 million,” Mr. Reyes told KTLA.
