California Assemblyman Vince Fong won Tuesday’s special election to complete the remainder of former Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s term in Congress.

Mr. Fong defeated fellow Republican candidate Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux in the special election. The term ends in January.

A former McCarthy aide, Mr. Fong was Mr. McCarthy’s chosen successor for the 20th Congressional District.

The race for the seat is not completely over. Mr. Fong and Sheriff Boudreaux will battle it out in the polls again in November for a full term for the seat.

Mr. McCarthy, the House speaker before being ousted in October, resigned from his seat in December. He endorsed Mr. Fong, as did former President Donald Trump.

Mr. Fong almost wasn’t allowed to run for the House seat because he had filed for reelection for his Assembly seat, but two different courts ruled he could be on the ballot.
