Russia sustained about 48,240 combat casualties in January, making it the second-most costly month for the Kremlin since President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
More than 50,000 Russian troops have been killed or wounded in 2025 and more than 837,000 since the war began, according to the British Ministry of Defense.
About 1,556 Russian soldiers were killed or wounded daily in January — the second-highest daily rate of casualties in the Russia-Ukraine war.
January’s numbers were a slight decrease from the previous month, however. About 48,670 Russian casualties were recorded in December, the most costly month of the war for Russia, British military officials posted Wednesday on X in their latest assessment of the battlefield.
“Russia’s casualty rate will likely continue to average above 1,000 a day in February 2025, reflecting the high tempo of Russian operations and offensives,” British officials said.
