The body of a 64-year-old man was found floating near a private dock on Lake Lanier in Forsyth County, Georgia. The local coroner is working to determine the cause of death.
Authorities haven’t publicly named the victim. He was seen swimming near the dock prior to going under, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said, according to Atlanta’s WSB-TV.
Nobody directly witnessed the victim going under, but a neighbor pulled the deceased man from the water before responders arrived at around 2 p.m. Sunday, reported WSB’s radio affiliate.
While drowning is a possible cause of death, authorities also detected electricity in the water.
“Firefighters on board our marine unit did detect an electrical current near the dock. … Once a nearby electrical plug powering a boat lift was unplugged and the [lift] deenergized, the current disappeared,” Forsyth County Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers told Atlanta-area radio station WDUN.
The Forsyth County Coroner’s Office is working to figure out whether the victim was electrocuted or drowned.
