A 3-year-old girl was left hospitalized after being mauled by a female black bear at a private campground near Red Lodge, Montana, over the weekend.
The attack happened at around 10 p.m. local time Sunday, when the bear got into a tent and attacked toddler Madison Findley-Dickson.
Bear traps quickly began being set and the campground was fully evacuated on Monday. The bear was shot dead later that day, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks said Tuesday.
Madison was released from a Billings hospital Tuesday, her family told Cowboy State Daily. They were visiting the area and hail from Spokane, Washington.
The bear involved had no prior history of aggression, but could have been attracted to the campsite by a cooler, food and garbage located in and around the tent.
The animal was described by wildlife authorities as a “subadult” bear, a category comparable to an adolescent in humans — not yet technically fully grown but no mere cub.
Montana FWP officials said that the “bear had likely become food-conditioned and human-habituated after accessing unsecured attractants in the area.”
Montana FWP officials urged campers to throw trash into bear-resistant bins and to keep food and anything else with a scent in bear-resistant storage away from tents.
