President Biden will kick off the Democratic National Convention with an opening night primetime address, sources familiar with the planning confirmed Wednesday.

Mr. Biden was initially set to close out the program by giving an acceptance speech on the last night as the Democratic nominee for president.

But his sudden withdrawal and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris forced convention planners to change their schedule. The president’s speech will be part of the opening night at the Chicago convention next month.

Opening night will be “a big tribute” to Mr. Biden’s legacy and achievements, planners confirmed. It will focus on how he moved America past the COVID-19 era and other accomplishments.

Wednesday and Thursday nights of the convention are usually reserved for both the vice presidential and presidential nominee to speak, meaning Monday was the most likely night for Mr. Biden’s address.

Former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama will speak Tuesday night, according to a CNN report.

Mr. Biden bowed out of the presidential race in the aftermath of his devastating debate performance against former President Donald Trump.

He endorsed Ms. Harris, who quickly galvanized Democratic support and became the presumptive favorite. She is expected to name her running mate before Aug. 7.
