President Biden on Thursday marked the ninth anniversary of his son Beau’s death with a visit to his gravesite and laying flowers at a memorial for veterans in Delaware.
The president was accompanied by several family members, including first lady Jill Biden, son Hunter Biden, and most of his grandchildren. They attended church at the cemetery in the president’s home state.
Beau Biden, a former Delaware attorney general, died of brain cancer in 2015 at the age of 46.
After the church visit, Mr. Biden traveled to a veterans memorial in Wilmington, where he left flowers.
Beau Biden had served a yearlong tour in Iraq as a member of the Delaware Army National Guard, and the president has speculated in the past that toxins from “burn pits” used by the U.S. military to dispose of waste there may have caused the cancer.
Earlier this week, Mr. Biden spoke about his older son’s death at a Memorial Day event with military families.
“The pain of his loss is with me every day, as it is with you,” he said. “Still sharp. Still clear. But so is the pride I feel in the service. As if I can still hear him saying, ‘It’s my duty, Dad. It’s my duty.”
Mr. Biden was spotted at the church speaking with son Hunter, who is scheduled to go on trial for federal gun charges in Wilmington next week.
