President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris took the stage Monday for a final time to watch their political nemesis, President-elect Donald Trump, take the oath of office at his inauguration.
Mr. Biden, in a navy blue suit, and Ms. Harris, dressed in black, stood with slight smiles and acknowledged the U.S. Capitol Rotunda audience members, who clapped for the pair.
They attended the inauguration as part of a traditional show of comity as the U.S. peacefully transfers power to a new leader.
Mr. Trump refused to attend President Biden’s inauguration in 2021.
Mr. Trump defeated Ms. Harris in the general election after she took over the Democratic ticket for Mr. Biden.
Vice President-elect J.D. Vance entered the Rotunda with a broad smile and bright red necktie, while Mr. Trump entered, smiled and shook hands. He wore a purple-tinged tie and dark suit and was welcomed with chants of “USA! USA! USA!”
Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota Democrat, thanked Capitol staff and officers for swiftly moving the ceremony indoors due to bitter cold temperatures in Washington.
“This ceremony marks what will soon be 250 years of our democracy,” she said.
