President Biden snapped at reporters during a recent White House event, the latest in a series of hostile run-ins with the press on his way out the door.
During a ceremony Sunday night, Mr. Biden took reporters’ questions after signing a bill that enables public sector workers such as teachers and firefighters to increase their Social Security benefits.
A reporter asked Mr. Biden about President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to end birthright citizenship.
“I might be the oldest president, but I know more world leaders than anyone one of you have ever met in your whole goddamn life!” Mr. Biden shot back.
It was his latest attack on reporters as his term winds down.
In November, a reporter asked Mr. Biden if he would be able to reach a hostage deal between Israel and Hamas before his time in office is over.
“Do you think you can keep from getting hit in the head by a camera behind you,” he snapped.
Mr. Biden’s battles with the press have long been a staple of his career going back to his time in the Senate.
“President Biden has been snappy with the press as long as he has been in public life. If you are feeling generous, it’s quirky and funny. If you are not feeling generous, it’s snippy and mean. It’s who President Biden is,” said Peter Loge, who teaches political communication at George Washington University.
Mr. Loge said the tussles won’t overshadow Mr. Biden’s efforts to cement his legacy before he leaves office.
“I’m not sure a lot of people are paying attention to President Biden. Trump has been acting like the president for months,” he said.
Conservative critics blasted Mr. Biden’s flip answer.
“What a bitter person,” Steve Guest, a conservative author and former communications adviser for GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, wrote on social media.
CNN conservative commentator Scott Jennings joked on X that Mr. Biden was “the most civil, decent and devoutly Catholic president we’ve ever had,” followed by an eye-roll emoji.
Although Mr. Biden has pitched himself as a champion of the free press, he frequently blasts journalists. In June — weeks before he dropped out of the presidential race — Mr. Biden complained that reporters never “play by the rules” because they ask questions that diverge from topics he wanted to discuss. The comment drew a sharp rebuke from the White House Correspondents Association.
A week earlier, a reporter asked Mr. Biden if he could ask a second question and the president awkwardly fired back, “No, one!” Mr. Biden did answer the question but then criticized the reporter saying he didn’t “keep the deal.”
In 2022, Mr. Biden famously called Fox News’ Peter Doocy a “stupid son of a bitch” after he asked a question about whether inflation would be a political liability ahead of midterms. Mr. Doocy said that Mr. Biden later called him to “clear the air” and insisted the comments were “nothing personal.”
That same year, he told Mr. Doocy’s colleague Jacqui Heinrich that she asked “a stupid question” in response to her question about Mr. Biden’s plan to hold Russia accountable ahead of its invasion of Ukraine.
