A slight majority of New Hampshire residents would support President Biden in a hypothetical rematch with former President Donald Trump in 2024, according to a poll released Friday that shows outright anger toward the ex-president is giving the incumbent a boost.
The CNN/University of New Hampshire poll has Mr. Biden leading Mr. Trump, 52%-40%, while 8% are not decided or would support another candidate.
The Granite State doles out four electoral votes in the presidential race, and Mr. Biden won them by about 7 percentage points in 2020.
The new poll is notable because it contrasts with national polls that show Mr. Biden in a neck-and-neck race with Mr. Trump even as Mr. Trump battles criminal charges in multiple jurisdictions.
Mr. Biden has suffered from low approval ratings, price inflation and questions about his advanced age. But pollsters found that distaste for Mr. Trump is driving the New Hampshire polling gap between the two men.
About six in 10 voters, 62%, said they would be dissatisfied or worse with another Trump presidency, with 56% expressing anger over the prospect, compared to 56% who would be dissatisfied and 38% who would be angry with another Biden term.
Also, 94% of Democrats said they would back Mr. Biden while 79% of Republicans in the state would support Mr. Trump in a general election, according to the poll.
Mr. Trump is focused on winning the GOP primary in New Hampshire, which holds the first contest in the nation after the Iowa caucuses.
Polls show him struggling to get a majority of Republican support, but he consistently has double-digit leads over his nearest primary foe in the Granite State.
In the Democratic primary, Mr. Biden holds a big lead despite disgust in New Hampshire over the party’s efforts to let South Carolina have its primary before the Granite State.
Mr. Biden enjoys support from 78% of New Hampshire primary voters while Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stands at 9% and Marianne Williamson at 6%.
The incumbent faces some headwinds, however. Only 46% of New Hampshire residents approve of Mr. Biden’s job performance and 54% disapprove, while only four in 10 persons say the president has maintained the right priorities while 57% say he hasn’t focused on the most important problems.
The poll was conducted Sept. 14-18 among 2,107 New Hampshire adults and had a margin of error of 2.1 points.
