President Biden’s reelection campaign announced Thursday it will highlight the battle for abortion rights with a blitz of ad buys, campaign rallies and events ahead of the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision.
In the lead-up to the anniversary on Jan. 22, the Biden campaign will run television and digital ads highlighting the impact of GOP-led abortion restrictions in swing states such as Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
Mr. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will also hold a campaign rally in Northern Virginia on Jan. 23, the campaign said. First lady Jill Biden and second gentleman Dough Emhoff will attend, marking the first campaign rally featuring all four individuals.
On Jan. 22, Ms. Harris will travel to Wisconsin, where she will talk about the impact of the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Both events will focus on efforts by states to roll back abortion rights and link that effort to former President Donald Trump, who likely will be Mr. Biden’s 2024 opponent, and Republican lawmakers. Three of the Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe were nominated by Mr. Trump.
“Donald Trump is the reason that more than 1 in 3 American women of reproductive age don’t have the freedom to make their own health care decisions. Now, he and MAGA Republicans are running to go even further if they retake the White House,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement.
The all-out abortion rights campaign underscores Democrats’ belief that the issue will be a winning one for them. Democrats and abortion rights advocates have notched a string of electoral victories, including November ballot measures in conservative states like Ohio and Kentucky.
A CBS News poll released at the end of last year found that 57% of Americans believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases.
The Roe decision was rendered on Jan. 22, 1973.
