Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is congratulating President-elect Donald Trump on his victory, a nod to their countries’ close relationship despite their personal animus over the years.

“Congratulations to Donald Trump on being elected President of the United States,” Mr. Trudeau wrote on X.

“The friendship between Canada and the U.S. is the envy of the world,” he wrote. “I know President Trump and I will work together to create more opportunity, prosperity and security for both of our nations.”

Canada and the U.S. share a massive border and are close trading partners, so leaders of both countries try to find common ground.

But the Trudeau-Trump relationship has been fraught at times.

Mr. Trudeau was caught on camera at a NATO summit in 2019 joking with other foreign leaders about Mr. Trump’s tendency to be long-winded with the press at the start of meetings.

Mr. Trump called Mr. Trudeau “two-faced” and said the Canadian leader was upset about U.S. demands for greater mutual defense spending from Canada.
