NextImg:Arch-conservative warns Speaker Johnson not to count on votes from House Freedom Caucus

Rep. Bob Good, chair of the House Freedom Caucus, warned House Speaker Mike Johnson not to assume that he has votes from the three-dozen-member arch-conservative caucus going forward.

“Don’t assume you have our votes for the things that don’t matter, when you don’t want them for things that do matter,” Mr. Good, Virginia Republican, told the Hill.

Mr. Good’s message comes after the House passed yet another stopgap bill to avert a partial government shutdown this week.

The lawmaker urged Mr. Johnson, Louisiana Republican, to include more stringent border policies in the legislation, claiming that doing so would capture the momentum of over a dozen Democrats who had voted against President Biden’s border policies earlier in the week.

However, Mr. Johnson did not relent and the arch-conservatives stayed their typical course of voting against short-term funding extensions.

Mr. Johnson, like his predecessor, has struggled to quell rebellions from his right flank throughout his short tenure as speaker.

Mr. Good’s promise to use his and the Freedom Caucus’ votes as a cudgel against the speaker set up a rocky path forward for the GOP-led House because of Mr. Johnson’s razor-thin majority, which is set to shrink this week when Rep. Bill Johnson, Ohio Republican, retires for a university leadership position.

He’ll also have to contend with frustrations from different facets in his conference.

A handful of arch-conservatives have threatened to oust the speaker if he relents to Democrats on border security in the ongoing Senate negotiations to tie Ukraine and Israel aid to more stringent GOP border policies.

Others are growing incensed over continued rebellions by Mr. Good and Co. and have urged the speaker to seek better counsel on policy decisions.
