Apple said it is rolling out a fix for a “bug” in its iPhones’ text-to-speech software that sometimes replaces words beginning with “r” — including “racist” — with “Trump.”
Users have also reported that words such as “rampant” and “rampage” were occasionally swapped out for President Trump’s last name.
“We are aware of an issue with the speech recognition model that powers dictation and we are rolling out a fix today,” an Apple spokeswoman said, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Social media users flagged the issue in viral videos. “You say ‘racist’ and it blurts out Trump,” one TikTok user declared.
The Journal confirmed the issue through multiple tests, finding that dictation software sometimes inserted “Trump” instead of “racist” before replacing it moments later.
The bug comes as Apple works to expand its artificial intelligence capabilities, with the company facing scrutiny over errors in its AI-generated content, including a recently disabled news summary feature.
The glitch raised concerns about Apple’s artificial intelligence systems, making news just a day after the company unveiled a $500 billion investment in the U.S. — a move widely seen as an effort to court favor with the Trump administration.
