Apple’s first headset hit the market last week, and already customers are pushing the technology into dangerous places.
Over the weekend, viral videos of consumers using the Apple Vision Pro in the real world started popping up on social media. One striking example showed a man behind the wheel of a self-driving Tesla wearing the headset.
On Monday, the video was reposted by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. He warned consumers against using anything that would distract them while driving.
“Reminder — ALL advanced driver assistance systems available today require the human driver to be in control and fully engaged in the driving task at all times,” he wrote on X.
Apple’s guide for the Vision Pro warns customers against using the headset while driving.
Other videos that gained traction showed users wearing the headsets while walking down a sidewalk or crossing a street. The practice could be dangerous. While settings for the Vision Pro allow for visibility, using the headset will generally limit a user’s ability to take in surroundings.
According to Apple, the Vision Pro is a “spatial computing” device that lets users access most of the apps and features available on a smartphone. Several prominent tech influencers have shown off the device’s mapping and computational capabilities while walking or sitting at a desk.
