A 60-year-old North Carolina man was found dead in Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park this week, the sixth person to die there in less than a month.

He was trying to hike the Thunder River Trail-Deer Creek loop, according to the National Park Service.

The Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received reports Tuesday that the man, who hasn’t been publicly identified by officials, failed to check in with family. The next day, an NPS helicopter found his body between the Lower Tapeats and Deer Creek campsites, park officials said in a release Thursday.

A probe by park officials and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office in Arizona regarding the death is ongoing.

Overall in 2024, the North Carolina hiker was the 14th person to die at Grand Canyon National Park, park officials told The Associated Press. There were 11 deaths there in 2023, and the park typically sees 10 to 15 people die each year.
