Meade High School in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, spent much of Thursday under lockdown after a 17-year-old boy attending the school was stabbed.
The stabbing took place at around 10:09 a.m. The unnamed victim was taken to the hospital in stable but serious condition and is conscious, Anne Arundel County Police Chief Amal Awad said at a press conference.
No weapons have been found in connection to the stabbing. Chief Awad also appealed to the suspect or suspects involved to turn themselves in.
“I would say this is an isolated incident … we do know that more than likely they were part of the student population,” Chief Awad said of the suspect.
The Severn, Maryland, school was put on lockdown with students staying in place in their classrooms and with no one being allowed into or out of the school.
While the investigation is ongoing, parents were able to pick up their children starting at 3:18 p.m., with all afterschool activities canceled, school officials wrote on X.
The school’s post did not make any mention of buses coming to get other students or whether those living closer by would be allowed out to walk themselves home.
The Anne Arundel County cheerleading championship had been scheduled to start at Meade High School at 6 p.m. There is not yet a new date for the competition according to the Baltimore Sun.
