An American man has died and a woman was in critical condition after they were electrocuted by a hot tub at a seaside resort in Puerto Peñasco in the Mexican state of Sonora.

The couple were staying in a private condominium, and suffered an electrical shock from the hot tub Tuesday evening, the Attorney General’s Office for the State of Sonora said on Facebook, as translated from Spanish by Google.

Jorge Guillen, 43, of El Paso, Texas, died as a result of the shock, while Lizette Zambrano, 35, was hospitalized for unspecified injuries related to the electrical discharge.

Family members of the couple told El Paso CBS affiliate KDBC-TV that she remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The hot tubs and condos are part of the Sonoran Sea Resort, registered nurse Sara Gaitan-Perez told the Arizona Daily Star. She is staying there, and told the Arizona Daily Star that she and other bystanders tried to revive the victims.

“The wife ended up becoming responsive and was breathing on her own by the time she was taken by gurney to the ambulance,” Ms. Gaitan-Perez said.

Ms. Gaitan-Perez said that Mr. Guillen and Ms. Zambrano were the only people in the hot tub at the time of the incident.

Mexican authorities are now working to find the cause of the shock.
