A vehicle at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina struck and killed an American Airlines employee on Monday.
The accident occurred at a paved ramp, where aircraft park, load and unload, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
An airport official told Charlotte’s WBTV that at “approximately 9:30 a.m., a single-vehicle accident involving an airline ramp vehicle occurred. … Emergency and medical crews responded promptly. Sadly, the individual involved did not survive. Our deepest condolences go out to the employee’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”
The victim, who hasn’t been publicly identified, died at the scene, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department told the TV station.
In addition to airport officials, American Airlines and the victim’s union are involved in investigating what happened.
“We are devastated by the accident involving a team member. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and our local team members. We are focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time,” an American Airlines spokesperson told Charlotte’s WCNC-TV.
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers wrote on social media, “The IAM is coordinating with authorities to conduct a full investigation. The IAM has dispatched a safety committee to assist and will provide support to our affected members. Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of our deceased member.”
