Data cloud company Snowflake announced Thursday that it has been authorized to provide artificial intelligence-powered data storage for the Department of Defense and its related agencies.

Snowflake said that under the Impact Level 5 Provisional Authorization, the Defense Department will have access to the company’s secure unified data platform, which will house sensitive unclassified information. DOD workers will also have access to Snowflake’s AI-driven insights via the company’s advanced data analytics and cooperation tools.

The authorization will streamline data-sharing processes within the DOD by allowing members to “accelerate their data cloud migration by protecting and sharing mission critical data across the cloud,” Snowflake said in press release.

The company added that its services will improve defense workers’ financial management, logistical and supply chain management, cybersecurity and open source intelligence.

“The Department of Defense’s mission to enhance readiness and drive innovation demands secure, data-centric solutions,” said Matthew Rose, head of corporate government relations at Snowflake. “Achieving IL5 authorization underscores Snowflake’s commitment to providing these solutions to service members, customers, and industry partners.

“This milestone allows us to bring secure and efficient enterprise solutions to controlled unclassified workloads across the national security community, improving readiness, ensuring fiscal accountability, rebuilding the military and industrial base, and delivering the best systems available.”
