Operations at Pier G at the Port of Long Beach, California, were temporarily halted after 67 containers fell off a cargo ship.
The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating why the containers fell off the cargo ship Mississippi just after 9 a.m. Tuesday, the port said in a release.
Falling containers damaged the clean air barge connected to the Mississippi, and a person at the scene, unnamed by authorities, suffered a minor injury, the port said on social media.
The Coast Guard established a safety zone in a 500-yard area around the Mississippi. Pier G reopened for cargo operations by 11:07 a.m. Wednesday, with the exception of the ship’s immediate vicinity, the port said.
Containers are being recovered from the water.
The Mississippi sails under the Portuguese flag and left Shenzhen, China, on Aug. 26, according to the tracking website Vessel Finder.
