An 11-year-old girl died in Rockville, Maryland, Thursday after she was hit by a school bus shortly after it left Earle B. Wood Middle School.
The crash happened in the area of Russet Road and Bauer Drive at around 3 p.m.
The victim, whom authorities have not publicly identified, lived in the area and was a student at the school along with the children on the bus, officials said, according to Bethesda Today.
The girl died as a result of the collision, but no one on the bus was injured, the Montgomery County Police Department said on X.
Authorities are still figuring out whether the girl was riding the bike at the time of the crash.
“I don’t know whether or not she was on the bicycle or whether she was walking the bicycle, but there was a bicycle involved,” Montgomery County Police Department spokeswoman Shiera Goff said, according to Washington’s WTOP-FM.
No charges will be filed against the bus driver, who authorities have not publicly identified, until the investigation into the incident is complete, according to the radio station.
Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Taylor said at a press briefing, as quoted in Bethesda Today, “This is heartbreaking news for our school system and our community. No words can truly capture the pain that our school community is feeling at this time. This is every parent’s worst nightmare and every educator’s greatest fear.”
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said in a statement, “My heart goes out to the child’s family and loved ones. Our entire County is grieving tonight. … I ask everyone to support the schools and communities impacted, and please give them the privacy and space they need during this incredibly difficult time.”
