Eleven D.C. public schools are suffering from a lack of heat as temperatures barely climb above freezing.
Campuses that don’t have heat in parts of their building include the School-Within-School at Goding, the Leckie Education Campus, the Browne Education Campus, Ron Brown College Preparatory High School, Deal Middle School, and Burroughs, Cleveland, Langdon, Powell and Savoy elementary schools.
The gym at Kimball Elementary School is also dealing with heating problems, according to ABC affiliate WJLA-TV and CBS affiliate WUSA-TV.
Not every part of every school is lacking in heat, school officials say, and they don’t expect classes to be disrupted.
“The Department of General Services has dispatched contractors to evaluate the system and initiate repairs. While we await the permanent fix, we will continue working with DCPS and [Department of General Services] partners to arrange temporary heating solutions such as space heaters or moving students to warmer spaces,” Deal Middle School Principal Diedre Neal told families in a letter, according to the two TV stations.
A DCPS spokesperson told the stations that families had been notified of the issues, though one family said they would not have known if a teacher hadn’t contacted them.
“If it wasn’t for the teacher, we wouldn’t have known anything,” Tyler Coleman, the aunt of a special-needs student at the Browne Education Campus, told WJLA-TV.
Temperatures in the Washington area will remain cold going into the weekend as parts of the region expect more snow. Highs on Friday will range from 26 to 34 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, and are expected to fall as low as 8 degrees overnight between Saturday and Sunday.
