Washington Examiner senior columnist Salena Zito predicted that New York Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani’s policies won’t work for other Democratic candidates across the country.
Mamdani defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary last month. The 33-year-old has promised his supporters rent freezes, free child care, and free bus transportation. Zito appeared on Fox and Friends on Thursday to dismiss the popularity of these policies nationwide.

“To win presidential elections, you have to be able to appeal to the working class,” Zito explained.
“You think voters are scrambling for government-run grocery stores?” Fox News host Charles Hurt asked Zito, referring to Mamdani’s promise to open a city-run grocery store.
“That is not going to play out in Erie, Pennsylvania,” Zito said. “So if they’re going to put forth candidates, and they’re going to put forth an agenda that mimics what he is saying, they’re going to suffer deep losses in the midterms.”
“You’re not going to win states like Pennsylvania if you have to stand side by side with Zohran and accept what he’s saying in your state,” Zito said.

Mamdani will still have to face incumbent Eric Adams, who won office as a Democratic candidate but has taken the independent route for reelection. Adams predicted that Mamdani’s policies will not be popular among the general population of New York.
Cuomo’s brother, NewsNation host Chris Cuomo, suggested that if other candidates like Mamdani continue winning Democratic primaries, the party is “dead.”
