YouTube is following in the footsteps of X by launching a “notes” feature for videos. 

Over the coming weeks, users can expect to see certain videos with notes under them giving additional context.

The new feature will help provide information to viewers, such as whether a video is meant to be satirical or if a video features old footage purporting to be current. 

The ability to add notes will only be extended to certain creators and users and will only initially be shown in the United States. During the beginning rollout, third-party evaluators will determine how helpful notes are to users, which will help train the system’s algorithm.

Users will get the chance to vote on whether they think a community note is helpful, not helpful, or unrelated. The more times a community note is voted to be helpful, the higher the likelihood that it will show up on a video. 

This feature has been a part of X since 2021.
