One of the primary arguments against the election of Donald Trump in both 2016 and 2020 was his lack of character. He’s cheated on his wife with a porn star, made plenty of derogatory comments about women’s appearances and bodies, and made it clear that he regrets few, if any, of these vices.

With Trump leading the GOP field for the 2024 nomination , many of these same complaints are sure to come to the surface again. And it’s important that they do. It matters a great deal whether the man elected to the White House has the moral fiber and temperament to do the job well.

But what are we to say of Trump’s rival, President Joe Biden , who reportedly berates and screams profanities at his aides and covers for his son’s wretched behavior, including Hunter Biden’s efforts to cut off a 4-year-old girl whom he fathered?

Axios reported this week that Joe Biden has a nasty temper that he’s learned to hide well while in public. Behind closed doors, the report said, Biden is prone to using phrases like, “God dammit, how the f*** don’t you know this?!,” “Don’t f****** bullsh** me!," and “Get the f*** out of here.” Apparently, White House staff are supposed to interpret these insults as a sign of respect.

Even Biden’s public attempts at politeness reveal serious character deficiencies that few on the Left are willing to admit. He has refused, for example, to acknowledge the little girl in Arkansas that shares Hunter Biden's — and his — blood, and in fact, seems to be a part of Hunter’s effort to erase any evidence of her biological ties to the Biden family.

In Arkansas earlier this year, Hunter Biden's legal team asked the court to bar 4-year-old Navy Joan from ever using the Biden name and to slash Hunter’s required child support payments significantly. A settlement between Hunter Biden and Navy’s mother, Lunden Roberts, stipulates that Roberts will not change Navy’s last name to Biden, and in return, the little girl will get one of Hunter’s paintings, child support until she’s 18, and the horrific reality that her biological father wants nothing to do with her.

Joe Biden, the supposed family man, has gone along with all of this. He has publicly stated he has only six grandchildren, intentionally leaving out Navy in his count, and his staff in the White House have been reportedly told in “strategy meetings” to say the same.

Some on the Left have defended the president’s decisions, arguing he can’t force Hunter Biden to be a father. Fine. But he could choose to be a grandfather, and instead, he’s decided to enable his crack-addict son in leaving a massive hole in a little girl’s self-worth that she’ll spend her whole life trying to fill.

It’s encouraging to see that at least some on the Left recognize the president’s appalling behavior for what it is. Maureen Dowd’s recent New York Times column on Joe Biden’s deliberate erasure of Navy Joan, for example, is an important read.

But too many are willing to make excuses for a man whose character is just as lacking as his predecessor’s. At least Trump didn’t try to pretend otherwise.
