Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will travel to Beijing later this week in an attempt to improve communication and economic relations with China.

The Treasury Department announced that Yellen’s trip would occur between Thursday and Sunday and involve meetings with top officials.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen listens during the closing session of the New Global Financial Pact Summit, Friday, June 23, 2023 in Paris.

“While in Beijing, Secretary Yellen will discuss with PRC officials the importance for our countries — as the world’s two largest economies — to responsibly manage our relationship, communicate directly about areas of concern, and work together to address global challenges,” read the department’s press release.

In China, Yellen is set to discuss points from a speech she gave in April, which outlined the “three principles guiding America’s economic relationship with the PRC.”

“First, we seek to secure our national security interests along with those of our allies and to protect human rights through targeted actions that are not intended to gain economic advantage,” the release read. “Second, we seek a healthy economic relationship with China that fosters mutually beneficial growth and innovation and expands economic opportunity for American workers and businesses. Finally, we also seek to cooperate on urgent global challenges like climate change and debt distress.”

The treasury secretary’s trip does not include a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Axios reported. However, she will talk about China’s economic practices against other nations and the Biden administration’s plan for restricting outbound investment to the country.

The trip was previously planned for earlier this year, but it was postponed after a Chinese spy balloon was shot down over the Atlantic Ocean in February. The Biden administration has been trying to improve relations with the Chinese government ever since.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken was the last official from the Biden administration to speak directly with Chinese officials on a diplomatic visit last month. Shortly afterward, President Joe Biden referred to Xi as a "dictator," further complicating the tensions between the United States and China.
