Despite owner Elon Musk’s attempt to moderate the liberal bias of his X social media platform, a “radical remnant” on the site formerly called “Twitter” is boosting leftist politicians far more than conservatives, according to a new analysis.
Consider: X’s supposedly unbiased algorithm views Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) as the least toxic House member and Senate Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) as the “King of Congress.”
The analysis from the Media Research Center’s Free Speech America arm said that X is also boosting posts from Democrats up for reelection much more than those from Republicans.
“New damning evidence suggests a radical remnant within the ranks of Musk’s staff is side-swiping his free-speech vision by resurrecting the infamous censorship habits of old Twitter,” according to a preview of the analysis provided to Secrets on Monday.
“MRC Free Speech America researchers discovered that X is actively boosting content posted by Democrat congressional members’ accounts, while simultaneously de-amplifying their GOP counterparts during an election year,” added the MRC, which partners with Secrets for the weekly Liberal Media Scream published on Mondays.
The statistics show that Musk’s staff isn’t following his pro-free speech lead. Over the weekend, for example, he endorsed former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election. And on his account, he blasted liberal media outlets for their coverage of Trump.
The analysis explained that the X algorithm assigns each account a “visibility score” on a scale of 0-100. The higher the score, the more a post gets boosted. Low scores will “de-boost” posts.
“The results are in: X’s algorithm overwhelmingly favors the left, providing one of the most concerning examples of Big Tech election interference as voters prepare to go to the polls in November,” the analysis said.
The analysis counters reports that the site has become more popular with conservatives.
