FBI Director Christopher Wray detailed in his testimony to the House Judiciary Committee what would happen if Congress slashed funding from his agency as some members of the House Republican Conference have proposed.

Amid what House Republicans have called a “weaponization” of the FBI against conservatives, there have been calls to cut the bureau's funding unless some major reforms are made within the agency.

During his testimony, Wray said if Congress were to “defund” the FBI, it would be detrimental to the agency's missions and goals and would result in more violent crime and drug trafficking across the country.

“We would have hundreds more violent criminals out on the street, dozens more violent gangs terrorizing communities, hundreds more child predators on the loose, hundreds more kids left at those predators’ mercy instead of being rescued,” Wray said.

The director also played to GOP fears, saying that a decrease in funding to the bureau would result in threats from the Chinese Communist Party going unaddressed and hundreds of unmitigated ransomware attacks.

“It is not uncommon right now for a single FBI office in a single operation to seize enough fentanyl to wipe out an entire state,” Wray said. “So, many, many, many, many more of those doses would be sweeping the country.”

Since 2020 when Democrats across the country started calling for police departments across the country to be defunded, Republicans have hit them on it. It has become a main campaign message of Republicans that if Democrats were elected, they would defund the police. Now, Democrats have been flipping their words back on them amid the calls to strip funding away from the FBI.
