


Leaders from around the world reacted to the attack on Israel by Hamas Saturday that killed at least 100 people.
Hamas fired thousands of rockets and also sent dozens of fighters into Israel on Simchat Torah, a Jewish holiday celebrating the annual cycle of the Torah scroll reading. Some 35 Israelis have also been captured by Hamas fighters. Heads of state took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to release statements, some condemning violence and offering support for Israel.

"Terrifying news reach us today from Israel. We are deeply shocked by the rocket fire from Gaza and the escalating violence," German Chancellor Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz wrote. "Germany condemns these attacks by Hamas and stands by Israel."

"I am shocked by this morning's attacks by Hamas terrorists against Israeli citizens," U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wrote. "Israel has an absolute right to defend itself. We're in contact with Israeli authorities, and British nationals in Israel should follow travel advice."

“The Government condemns in the strongest terms the attacks on Israel,” Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said in a statement. “People's lives, the security of the region and the resumption of any political process are at risk. Hamas must immediately stop this barbaric violence. We support Israel's right to exist and defend itself."
"Horrible news from Israel. My condolences go out to everyone who lost relatives or close ones in the terrorist attack. We have faith that order will be restored and terrorists will be defeated," Ukrainian President Volodymry Zelenskyy wrote. "The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our embassy in Israel are ready to assist in any situation."

Other leaders called for both parties to stop any further violence. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said as much during a political party meeting.
“We call for restraint from all parties,” Erdogan said. “They must refrain from aggressive acts.”
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry similarly warned of the "grave consequences" of more violence and exhorted Israel and Hamas begin immediately "exercising maximum restraint and avoiding exposing civilians to further danger."
"We call on the Palestinian and Israeli sides to implement an immediate ceasefire, renounce violence, exercise the necessary restraint and establish, with the assistance of the international community, a negotiation process aimed at establishing a comprehensive, lasting and long-awaited peace in the Middle East," Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement.
Another group of leaders affirmed their support for Palestine in light of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring war against Hamas, which was founded in the neighboring country.
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is closely following the developments of the unprecedented situation between a number of Palestinian factions and the Israeli occupation forces, which has resulted in a high level of violence on several fronts there,” The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry wrote.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs holds Israel alone responsible for the current escalation due to this ongoing violations of the rights of the Palestinian people, the latest of which is the repeated raids on the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque under of the protection of Israeli police,” the Qatar government said in a statement.
Israel last received rocket fire in January, when the Islamic Jihad in Gaza fired two rockets toward Israel after a raid of a refugee camp by Israeli troops resulted in seven Palestinian gunmen and two civilians killed. These two rockets caused no casualties. Israel responded with air strikes on Gaza at the time.
