NextImg:Womb transplants will soon allow transgender women to become pregnant

In the name of " equal rights ," the word "woman" itself is being scrubbed and plastered over with dehumanizing language such as "menstruators," "egg-producers," and "pregnant people" — a term that has newfound relevance in light of recent scientific news.

As reported last week, surgeons in the United States and the United Kingdom are predicting that womb transplants will allow transgender women to become pregnant and give birth to their own offspring in the next decade. The first baby to be delivered post-uterus transplant was born in Sweden roughly 10 years ago. Since then, womb transplants have been completed in countries including Germany, Brazil, and Turkey, resulting in the birth of around 50 babies.

HOW EUROPE'S CRACKDOWN ON BIG TECH COULD AFFECT THE UNITED STATES

The transplant procedure involves implanting the donated uterus in a prospective mother, and then outside of the womb, the mother's eggs are fertilized with the father's sperm. The resulting embryos are implanted into the transplanted uterus, and if all goes according to plan, the baby will be delivered by cesarean section.

It is estimated that 1 in 4,500 women is born without a uterus. It is also possible for a woman to lose the organ as a result of undergoing labor or illness. For those facing reproductive challenges, struggling to conceive can be a process that is both physically and emotionally difficult. This technology, should it become widely available, offers a possible solution that is nothing short of miraculous.

As a scientist-by-training, I have mixed feelings about the arc of progress we are on. In a world devoid of politics, I think we should allow science and its applications to advance, regardless of the subject matter. But in a reality in which transgender activism has shown itself to be deranged and duplicitous, I believe we all should be concerned about the implications of these capabilities and the potential for their misuse.

Bringing a child into the world is not a decision that should be dictated by whimsy or impulsivity. Autogynephilia introduces an additional murky layer of complexity, considering that many male-born people experience sexual gratification at the thought of performing female bodily functions, including pregnancy, lactation, and childbirth. At the extreme end of possibilities, I can imagine trans activists, who are not known to accept the answer "no" from institutions or lawmakers, to treat motherhood as an accessory, another incessant demand, one they should be entitled to.
