NextImg:Woman acting in 'self-defense' won't be charged for fatal parking lot shooting


A North Carolina woman involved in a fatal shooting in a Food Lion parkling lot this week will not be charged.

Steven McLamb, 49, was shot and killed Wednesday with no charges being filed related to the incident that day or the next. Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said police were "fortunate to have access to various video" that informed their decision not to charge the anonymous female shooter.

"Mr. McLamb was the aggressor," Freeman told local news outlet ABC 11. "He followed the other individual into the parking lot and upon getting out of his car -- approaching her car and attempting to get into her car -- she, acting in self-defense, shot and killed him."

Freeman confirmed that the woman legally owned the gun and additionally had no criminal history.

"I think what's really important here for people to understand is that provision in our law is not an invitation to vigilante justice, but it does allow when someone has a responsible fear for imminent death or bodily injury that you're allowed to protect yourself," Freeman said.

North Carolina saw over 760 murders by gun in 2021, an increase of over 20% from the previous year. Police subsequently arrested 642 people for murder that same year, which was also an increase of roughly 15%.

The state of North Carolina is one of almost 30 states that has a Stand Your Ground Law, which permits those who fear for their lives to retaliate, often violently, to protect themselves.
