Lawmakers in Wisconsin have proposed changes to the state's absentee ballots that will reportedly ensure the security of the voting process, including the idea of watermarking absentee ballots.

State Rep. Scott Allen has recommended increasing security measures in the state's absentee voting process. This includes the addition of watermarks to every ballot mailed out to residents who request them. Wisconsin would be the first state to watermark its ballots if the plan passes in the Republican-controlled legislature.

“Our citizens need to have faith in the integrity of our election process,” Allen said, according to Just the News. “If we are going to continue using absentee ballots, then it is important to ensure that they are a safe and reliable method for voting,” Allen said.

“To help curb public distrust in absentee ballots, it is certainly worth the additional cost to make our absentee ballots secure and restore trust in our election process.”

Allen compared the process to how the United States treasury mints dollar bills, thus making it harder for others to counterfeit or forge false dollars.

It appears unlikely that Allen's proposed bill will pass. The plan will go to the legislature, which is Republican-controlled. The plan would then be presented to Gov. Tony Evers (D-MI), who has promised to veto legislation making voting harder.
