You would think that bringing home American hostages would be a unifying concern and a top priority for both parties. You have to wonder if the Democratic Party sees this the same way.
The crowd at the Republican National Convention chanted, “Bring them home,” in reference to the American hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza. Ronen and Orna Neutra, the parents of one of those hostages, took the stage at the convention to talk about their son, who has been held for 285 days and counting by the terrorist organization.
It is hard to imagine a similar display at the Democratic National Convention, given that large pockets of the Democratic Party harbor far more sympathy for the Palestinians and their terrorist leadership and far more animosity against Israel. That includes false claims, coming from Democratic members of Congress, that Israel is an apartheid state committing genocide, while other members have wanted to pressure Israel into a ceasefire deal with the genocidal terrorists who will keep attacking Israeli civilians well into the future if they are allowed to remain in power.
This impulse has bled up through the top of the party to President Joe Biden, who has treated Israel tougher than he has the Hamas terrorists who started this conflict, killed U.S. citizens, and took American hostages. Biden has gone so far as to give Hamas civilian aid that it regularly steals, even as Hamas has held hostages.
The activist base that holds the reins in the Democratic Party sees Israel as the villain, not the Hamas terrorists. This colors the party’s rhetoric and decision-making on the matter, to the point that Vice President Kamala Harris couldn’t celebrate hostages being freed by Israeli forces without making the problem about Palestinians.

When those activists gather in Chicago for the DNC, they will almost definitely not be chanting to bring hostages home. If any chant rings out, it is more likely to be the “ceasefire now” chant of terrorist sympathizers that try to put Israel on the same moral plane as Hamas (or even a lower moral plane). That is before you even get to the far worse chants that would be coming from protesters outside the event, who will likely reflect the college protesters who wave Palestinian flags instead of American ones and call for the elimination of Israel “from the river to the sea.”
It is a problem that this is even a discussion because nothing should be simpler than condemning terrorists and calling for American hostages to be released. The Democratic Party’s warped moral compass won’t let the party reach that simple conclusion, though, because it must always find a way to blame Israel and not the genocidal terrorists who are responsible for this conflict.
