Actor and rapper Will Smith is set to appear at the BET Awards this Sunday, which will be his first appearance at an award show since his slap at the Oscars in 2022.

Smith’s performance at the show comes two years into a 10-year ban from the Academy Awards, which he received for slapping comedian Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife during the broadcast.

“From his start as a rapper to The Fresh Prince to being a box office king as one of the Bad Boys, Will Smith is truly a global icon, and we are honored to welcome him back to grace the BET Awards stage,” the network wrote in a statement. “We look forward to Will adding to yet another defining night for the culture that is not to be missed.”

Besides Smith, other celebrities who will be featured at this award show include musicians Ice Spice and Usher, with the latter being honored with the show’s lifetime achievement award. Taraji P. Henson, known for her roles in Hidden Figures and The Color Purple, will host the show.

In the wake of getting banned from the Oscars for a decade, Smith released a video in July 2022 in which he apologized for his slap and called his behavior “unacceptable.” He also acknowledged that what he did was “probably irreparable.”

Rock largely dismissed Smith’s apology, stating that “everybody is trying to be a f***ing victim.” He also joked that “anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face.”

The Oscars slap occurred the same night Smith won best actor for his performance in King Richard, in which he played Richard Williams, the father of tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams. Smith’s most recent movie, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, was released on June 7 and has grossed $289 million worldwide off of a $100 million budget.
