


Although President Joe Biden’s campaign pushed for mic rule changes to usher order into the first presidential debate, political analysts say the move could end up helping former President Donald Trump.
During the 90-minute debate on Thursday, the candidates’ microphones will be cut when not speaking to prevent interruptions. The rule marks a departure from historic debate protocol and comes after viewers expressed intense frustration with the chaotic 2020 debates where candidates often talked over each other.

Trump, in particular, drew backlash for his frequent interruptions during his first presidential debate against Biden in 2020.
The Trump campaign is on board with the mic change, a rule NBC News chief political analyst Chuck Todd says could help the former president gain credibility with viewers by making “Trump seem more presidential.”
In contrast, Todd warns that while the Biden campaign pushed for the mic rule because it “so want[s] to have a different experience” from the 2020 debates, Democrats might be doing the presumptive Republican nominee a favor.

The political analyst believes during the 2020 debates, while Trump’s frequent interruptions angered Biden, they might have helped him win votes.
“Those moments of cross-talk, that frustrated Biden, that might have won him those debates. When you are protecting Trump from himself, you are doing him a favor,” Todd noted.
