Jay Jones, the Democratic nominee for attorney general in Virginia, fantasizes about murdering Republicans and their children and urinating on their graves, we recently learned.

We only know what Jones texts to one state lawmaker, and so we don’t know the breadth of the folks he would like to kill and exactly what sort of children he wants to suffer.

“Shocking” is the word some newspapers use to describe Jones’s texts. On that score, I need to quibble. I was appalled and repulsed by the texts. Given that Jones has a very good chance of being my state’s chief law enforcement officer, I’m also a bit terrified that his bloodthirsty hatred of conservatives will translate into political persecution.

But I wasn’t quite shocked by Jones’s texts. We already knew about his depraved indifference toward human life, thanks to his speeding violation.

In 2022, at age 33, Jones was caught going 116 miles per hour in a 60-mph zone. If someone is driving 90 in a 75, that person is reckless, or maybe dumb. If someone is going 90 in a 60, that person lacks all judgment. If someone is going 100 in a 60, that person is showing what our legal system calls “depraved indifference.” He may not be trying to kill other people, but he clearly simply doesn’t care if he kills other people.

Jones was going 16 mph faster than that.

And then he faced almost no consequences for his actions: He “served” the community service to which he was sentenced by volunteering, purportedly, for his own political action committee and the NAACP.

Jones is a man who simply doesn’t value human life. He wants his political opponents and their children dead because he thinks conservatives are fascists who “breed little fascists.” He demonstrably doesn’t care if his behavior kills other people.

It would be pretty dangerous to give such a depraved man the prosecutorial power of the state.
