Mark Scarsi has been assigned to one of the most politically charged cases in the country: first son Hunter Biden's nine-count indictment over tax problems.
Scarsi, a President Donald Trump appointee, has presided over the Central District of California’s Western Division since 2020. The area encompasses Los Angeles.

Scarsi was born in Syracuse, New York, in 1964, where he stayed to study computer and information science at Syracuse University. He earned a bachelor's and master's degree in the subject, using them to work as a software engineer with Lockheed Martin Corp., where he worked on detection and signal processing computer systems. Scarsi then decided to pursue a career in law, earning a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center upon his graduation in 1996, NBC News reported.
He worked at various law firms before becoming the chairman of the Global Intellectual Property Practice at the office of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCoy LLP, according to the White House.
Trump first nominated Scarsi in 2018 to fill the position of retiring Judge George King. After a delay, Scarsi was confirmed in an 83-12 vote in the Senate in 2020.
“My practice is focused on civil litigation with an emphasis on intellectual property matters. I have substantial courtroom experience in a variety of federal district courts, including the federal district courts in California, New York, Delaware, and Texas,” Scarsi told the Senate Committee.
