Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) is not concerned about President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump being tied in a recent poll.

Whitmer insisted that "voters are not stupid" and predicted they would rally around Biden. The Biden campaign co-chairwoman discussed how some said she would lose her gubernatorial reelection bid a year ago, but then, she ended up beating Republican Tudor Dixon by nearly 11 points.

"A year ago, people were writing my political obituary, and I won by 11 points and flipped both chambers of our legislature in Michigan, something that hadn't been done in 40 years. At the end of the day, voters are not stupid. They are very smart," Whitmer said on MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Reports.

"They know who's really working to improve the quality of their lives, who's working to codify rights instead of taking them away from people, who's working to make sure that all people in this country can get on a path to prosperity. Ultimately, that's how elections are decided. I'm confident that what this president has done is for the benefit of Americans. As we get closer to the election, that will drive how votes are," she added.

The New York Times/Siena poll from earlier this month showed Biden and Trump tied at 43%, and the RealClearPolitics polling average also shows Biden and Trump tied.

Whitmer stood firm on her support of Biden, even when asked about Rep. Dean Phillips's (D-MN) call for Biden to "pass the torch" to a younger Democrat in 2024.

"I am proud to be supporting President Biden. I am proud to be on the campaign for reelection," Whitmer said.

When discussing Trump's recent indictment in Fulton County, Georgia, on racketeering charges for his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election, Whitmer drew a contrast between Trump and Biden.

"That's precisely why at the end of the day, I have confidence that Joe Biden will get a second term and an opportunity to continue this work. But we take nothing for granted. We take no person for granted. Every person in this country is important. Every person deserves a path to prosperity and a leader who is not serving themselves but serving the public," Whitmer said.

"I think that's the juxtaposition of what we have seen, unfortunately, in today's politics. It's why this is another very consequential election coming up next year," Whitmer added.

Biden is expected to be the Democratic nominee, and no major candidates are challenging him. Trump is the clear front-runner in the Republican primary, with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) in second place, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average.
