The United States has seen signs pointing to an imminent Iranian attack against Israel.
There have been questions of whether Iran would get directly involved in Israel’s escalation against Hezbollah, Tehran’s top proxy militant force in the Middle East, though a senior White House official said Iran “is preparing imminently” to attack Israel.
“The United States has indications that Iran is preparing to imminently launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel. We are actively supporting defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack,” the senior White House official told the Washington Examiner on Tuesday. “A direct military attack from Iran against Israel will carry severe consequences for Iran.”
Israel has escalated its war against Hezbollah over the last couple of weeks, culminating in a new ground invasion into southern Lebanon over the last day or so, while last week, Israel’s military assassinated Hezbollah’s top leader, Hassan Nasrallah.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York last week, and he warned that Israel’s attacks against Hezbollah “cannot go unanswered.”
Iran has largely avoided getting directly involved in the conflicts between Israel and its proxies, having only done so once back in April.
Israel carried out a strike on an Iranian Consulate in Syria on April 1 that killed a senior Iranian commander and other senior members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Iranians waited a couple of days and then launched about 300 rockets, missiles, and drones at Israel, including some from its proxies.
The Israelis, with the help of several allies, including the U.S., were able to intercept nearly all of the projectiles, significantly limiting the damage.

The White House believes this Iranian attack could be similar to the April aerial assault.
Iran vowed to respond after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran on July 31, though it hasn’t done so yet.
The U.S. has bolstered its presence in the Middle East over the last several weeks, including as recently as this weekend, and it is prepared to help defend Israel from a similar attack.
