The White House is calling for more gun control as the Uvalde school shooting's anniversary approaches.
The lethal shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24, 2022, led to the most substantial new gun control measures in decades. However, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is calling on Congress to do more.
REPUBLICANS RIP BIDEN FOR TRYING TO INSERT TAXES IN DEBT CEILING DEAL
“While [President Joe Biden] is very appreciative of what Congress was able to do, there’s so much more to be done,” Jean-Pierre said. “We need to see Congress do something more, put forth its own commonsense gun reform. That’s what these families deserve.”
The shooting killed 19 students and two teachers and eventually led to the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act following a lobbying effort by Uvalde native Matthew McConaughey.
But Biden has continued to call for more aggressive gun control in the months since, specifically reinstating a ban on military-style weapons that was in place from 1994 to 2004.
He'll be holding an event Wednesday to mark the Uvalde shooting anniversary, Jean-Pierre added.
"You can certainly expect the president, the first lady, and the vice president are going to mark that tragic day," she said. "And we’ll have more to share later today or early tomorrow on what that looks like."

She told reporters that Biden's push will continue going forward.
"It was a tragic, tragic day, and guns are certainly an epidemic in this country," Jean-Pierre said. "It’s the No. 1 killer of our kids in America, and the president is going to continue to ask Congress to take more action."
