The White House denounced Rep. Al Green (D-TX) for introducing on Tuesday articles of impeachment to remove President Donald Trump from office over his decision to militarily target Iranian nuclear sites.
The resolution, the fourth such proposed by Green, accused Trump of violating the Constitution and abusing presidential powers because he did not seek congressional approval before authorizing surprise U.S. strikes against three Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend.

“President Trump’s unilateral, unprovoked use of force without congressional authorization or notice constitutes an abuse of power when there was no imminent threat to the United States, which facilitates the devolution of American democracy into authoritarianism,” the Texas Democrats’ resolution reads.
The Trump administration clapped back at Green’s impeachment push, arguing in a statement to the Washington Examiner that “everyone should celebrate” the strikes the president said “obliterated” a potential nuclear threat to the U.S.
“President Trump was able to quickly accomplish what no other President has been able to achieve – thanks to his ‘peace through strength’ leadership, Iran’s nuclear program has been obliterated and a ceasefire has been agreed to,” White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said. “Eliminating the prospect of nuclear war is a non-partisan and unifying accomplishment that everyone should celebrate as a historic moment for the United States, the Middle East, and the entire world.”
The president has already been impeached in the House twice, with both occurring during his first term in office when Democrats controlled the lower chamber, although the Senate voted to acquit him in both cases.
Green, who made waves for waving his cane and yelling at Trump during the president’s speech to Congress earlier this year, isn’t the only Democrat suggesting Trump should be impeached yet again. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sean Casten (D-IL) have also suggested the president’s decision to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities unconstitutionally circumvented Congress and constitutes grounds for impeachment.
The president stunned the country on Saturday evening when he announced the U.S. had gotten militarily involved in the conflict between Israel and Iran, with seven B-2 bombers flying 7,000 miles to drop 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs on three Iranian nuclear sites. The revelations came after earlier this month, Israel, a top U.S. ally in the Middle East, launched an effort seeking to eliminate Iran’s nuclear and military capabilities. The Iranian regime, which backed the Hamas terrorists who killed around 1,200 Israelis at a music festival in 2023, rolled out a series of retaliatory attacks, leading to speculation as to whether the U.S. would get involved in the dispute.
The strikes, said by the White House to have “obliterated” the regime’s nuclear program, and the subsequent ceasefire Trump brokered between Iran and Israel have earned him a wealth of platitudes, even from some Democrats such as Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA). However, Ocasio-Cortez’s push to impeach the president over intervening in the Middle Eastern dispute earned her a scathing presidential attack on Truth Social.
“Stupid AOC, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the ’dumbest’ people in Congress, is now calling for my Impeachment, despite the fact that the Crooked and Corrupt Democrats have already done that twice before,” Trump posted. “Instead of her constant complaining, Alexandria should go back home to Queens, where I was also brought up, and straighten out her filthy, disgusting, crime-ridden streets, in the District she ‘represents,’ and which she never goes to anymore.”
“She and her Democrat friends have just hit the Lowest Poll Numbers in Congressional History, so go ahead and try Impeaching me, again, MAKE MY DAY!” Trump continued.
But while Ocasio-Cortez and Green float impeachment talk, some powerful House Democrats have downplayed such efforts, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, House Judiciary ranking member Jamie Raskin (D-MD), and Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-CA), the chair of the House Democratic Caucus.
Others, such as Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT), have warned that trying to impeach Trump is a waste a time as it would be nearly impossible to pass due to a lack of votes needed to implement such a measure, given the GOP holds the majority in both chambers of Congress.
Moderate Democrats such as Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), who hail from battleground states where voters are more likely to have a favorable view of Trump, have called impeachment pushes “stupid politics.” Even Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in April declined to pursue articles of impeachment against Trump.
Last month, division among Democrats over impeachment strategy came into focus when Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) sought to bring the effort to the House floor for a vote.
However, he ended up pulling the articles of impeachment after receiving intense pressure do so from Jeffries and Aguilar, who argued there are more important issues for the Democratic caucus to be focused on.
“I have said before from this podium, this is not the right approach we should be taking,” Aguilar said.

Still, the idea appears to be gaining steam.
Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) announced in April support for impeachment efforts. And Ocasio-Cortez and Casten’s latest comments supporting efforts to charge Trump because he bombed Iran show that Democratic leadership is at a crossroads over whether to heed calls from progressives or centrists in the caucus on the matter.
