The White House has slammed a Florida school district's decision to remove a poem by President Joe Biden's inaugural poet, Amanda Gorman, from a Miami-Dade public school library's elementary section.

Biden was "proud" to include Gorman, the country's youngest inaugural poet, in his inauguration, according to press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

"As Miss Gorman said herself, the poem, 'The Hill We Climb,' was written so that all young people would see themselves in a historical moment," she told reporters Wednesday. "The president and his administration certainly stand with her."

"Banning books is censorship. Period. That's what that is," she said. "When you ban a book, you are censoring. It limits Americans' freedom, and we should all stand against that type of act when it comes to banning books."

A parent of a student at Bob Graham Education Center, a kindergarten through eighth grade Miami Lakes school, complained about Gorman’s poem, prompting a review. The parent claimed the poem contained "hate messages” and could "cause confusion and indoctrinate" young people who read it.

Gorman said she was “gutted” by the district’s decision. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has invited Gorman to the city for a reading.
