The White House refused to address "rumors" on Tuesday that President Joe Biden would reinstitute migrant family detention at the southern border.
The New York Times reported that the Biden administration might bring back a policy that saw families of illegal immigrants detained after crossing the border — a policy Biden criticized former President Donald Trump over and scrapped upon taking office.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre would not confirm or deny the reports.
“I’m not going to go in on rumors that are out there or conversations that are happening at this time,” she said. “The Department of Homeland Security is continuing to prepare for the eventual lift of Title 42. No decisions have been made.”
Several reporters asked about the news, which would see the White House bring back an immigration policy that migrant advocates decry as cruel and inhumane.
Title 42 is a pandemic-era policy that saw immigrants turned away at the border. It will expire on May 11, and the Biden administration has been under fire almost since the moment Biden took office over surging levels of illegal immigration.

Jean-Pierre repeated that she would not confirm or deny the reports, adding, "I'm not saying it is, and I'm not saying it is not." But she did generally defend the president's immigration stance.
"His approach has been making sure that we expand legal pathways for asylum-seekers, limiting illegal immigration, addressing root causes, and also increasing border security," she said. "That's how the president has seen the process moving forward. That has been his approach, and he wants to build an immigration system that is secure, orderly, and humane."
