The White House announced a new cybersecurity certification and labeling program meant to ensure users in the United States understand how secure their connected home devices are from hackers.

The Biden administration announced the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark program on Tuesday, a new effort organized by the Federal Communications Commission. It's based on security standards established by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The program will require devices connected to the "Internet of Things," the massive network of devices connecting to the internet, to adopt newly updated security standards to ensure user safety. While the list of criteria is not finalized, it will include practices such as requiring unique and strong default passwords, protecting stored and transmitted data, and updating security regularly.

"The goal is to make this something that consumers look for in the marketplace and that product manufacturers want to use," FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel told reporters.

Devices that can reach the presented standard will be labeled with the Cyber Trust Mark logo. This will include a QR code linking to a registry of certified devices. The program will also define cybersecurity requirements for internet routers, which are often targeted by hackers. The specifics will be reported to the FCC by the end of 2023.

Retail stores will be encouraged to prioritize selling labeled devices, the White House said. Several major retail companies, including Amazon and Best Buy, have already signed on.
