White House officials said they believe Iran could attack Israel with a rocket attack as soon as this week after Israel killed Hamas’s leader while he was in Tehran.

Israel faced a bombardment of attacks from Iran earlier this year, and White House officials told reporters Monday that they expect Iran could do a similar attack against the Jewish state this week.

“We share the same concerns and expectations that our Israeli counterparts have with respect to potential timing here — could be this week,” White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters Monday, according to the Times of Israel. “We have to be prepared for what could be a significant set of attacks.”

The United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy issued a joint statement on Monday calling on Iran to stand down from its threats.

“We expressed our support for the defense of Israel against Iranian aggression and against attacks by Iran-backed terrorist groups,” they said in the statement. “We called on Iran to stand down its ongoing threats of a military attack against Israel and discussed the serious consequences for regional security should such an attack take place.”

Israeli officials have placed the country on high alert over concerns that Iran will retaliate after the July killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. A Hezbollah commander was also killed in Beirut on the same day.

“The threats from Tehran and Beirut may materialize, and it is important to explain to everyone that readiness, preparedness, and vigilance are not synonyms for fear and panic,” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Reports have swirled that Iran may be preparing weapons in a similar way to how it did prior to its April attack on Israel, which was largely stifled by the Jewish state’s defense systems along with help from allies.
